DNC Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz’s Statement on Tonight’s Primary Results

Washington, DC – DNC Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz issued the following statement on the results of tonight’s primaries:

“Another primary Election Day, another confirmation that while Democrats continue to expand our party, the GOP is thwarting their attempts to reach out to new voters.

“Democrats are ready to unite behind the historic candidacy of Maryland Lieutenant Governor Anthony Brown, who is poised to become the state’s first African American governor, and would be just the fifth in our nation‘s history.

“Across the country, Democratic candidates are fighting to secure economic opportunity for working families, from Tim Bishop in New York’s first Congressional District to Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper. Come November, voters will cast their ballots for Democratic candidates who are on their side, instead of candidates like Lee Zeldin and Bob Beauprez who are beholden to radical, right wing ideology.

“Meanwhile in Mississippi, Sen. Thad Cochran barely survived a challenge from Chris McDaniel with the help of a huge cash advantage. McDaniel’s campaign was plagued by scandal and controversy, but Cochran still required a runoff just to win his party’s nomination. Like in Mitch McConnell's primary, even the 'establishment' candidates who win Republican primaries are out of touch and out of the mainstream.”

DNC Statement on RNC’s North Carolina “Black Advisory Board”

WASHINGTON, D.C. – In response to the Republican National Committee’s announcement of a North Carolina Black Advisory Board, DNC National Director of African American Media Kiara Pesante issued the following statement:

“Republicans are desperately trying to clean up Thom Tillis’ mess. By separating African American North Carolinians from what he deemed the ‘traditional’ population in the state, Tillis makes it clear that he isn’t interested in uniting North Carolina, but dividing it. This is not the first time Thom Tillis has made comments that are deeply offensive, and the reality of his divisive record is clear. From saying he wants to ‘divide and conquer’ people on public assistance to his dangerous record on jobs and health care that hurts middle class families across North Carolina, Thom Tillis has repeatedly shown that he is too out of touch to work for all North Carolinians in the Senate. The failed RNC ‘African American Outreach’ office in Charlotte couldn’t fix that, nor can this Advisory Board.”

DNC Statement on Wisconsin John Doe Investigation

Washington, DC — In response to newly released documents that show prosecutors alleging Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker was at the center of a nationwide “criminal scheme” to illegally coordinate with outside conservative groups, Democratic National Committee Press Secretary, Michael Czin released the below statement:

“The documents released today raise more questions than answers about Scott Walker’s misconduct during his first term. Walker’s coordination with Karl Rove and a Koch backed group, among others, is not only troubling and potentially illegal – it is a clear violation of the public’s trust.

“For years, Walker has refused to answer questions about his conduct. Now that prosecutors have alleged criminal conduct by Walker, it’s time for him to come clean to the people of Wisconsin and face the consequences, whatever they may be.”

DNC Chair Wasserman Schultz Statement in Recognition of Juneteenth

Washington, DC – DNC Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz released the following statement today in recognition of Juneteenth, also known as Emancipation Day:

“On June 19, 1865, Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas and relayed General Order Number 3, informing the state’s slaves that they had been freed.

“Juneteenth is an opportunity to recognize the sacrifices of those who suffered from the stain of slavery in our nation’s early history, and the courage of those who struggled to secure a more perfect union. We commemorate those who were born or sold into slavery, and those who died in the process of bringing about its end.

“Juneteenth is also an opportunity to celebrate the significant contributions made by the African American community, and our nation’s rich history of those willing to fight for equality and freedom for all.

“To this day, the fight continues. Voter expansion, immigration reform, marriage equality, education reform, employment non-discrimination, health care reform – each of these are part of the effort to extend the full set of rights and privileges to which we’re entitled as Americans.

“News of the Emancipation Proclamation finally reached Galveston 901 days after it was issued by President Lincoln. Today, information can cross the globe instantaneously, but the spread of civil rights still takes time. I’m proud that the American people and the Democratic Party remain committed to the fight for progress.”

DNC Chair’s Statement on President Obama’s Decision to Sign Non Discrimination Executive Order

Washington, DC – DNC Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz issued the following statement today on President Obama’s decision to sign an executive order to ban discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation or identity for federal contractors:

“President Obama’s decision to sign an executive order to ban discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation or identity for federal contractors marks another significant step in our nation’s progress on civil rights. As the President has said, ‘in the United States, who you are and who you love should never be a fireable offense.’

“The executive order comes almost exactly one year after the Supreme Court’s decision to strike down the Defense of Marriage Act following President Obama’s refusal to defend DOMA’s constitutionality. President Obama has also overseen the repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell, and strengthened protections against hate crimes by signing the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd, Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act.

“This executive order adds to the list of the LGBT community’s accomplishments during the Obama administration and is cause for celebration as we recognize June as LGBT Pride Month.  However, Democrats in Congress remain steadfast in our commitment to passing the Employee Non-Discrimination Act into law that will permanently extend these protections to all Americans. It’s time for Republicans to join us.”

DNC and ODP Secure Legal Win for Early Voting in Ohio

Washington, DC—Today the US District Court for the Southern District of Ohio ruled in favor of the Democratic National Committee and the Ohio Democratic Party’s motion for summary judgment to permanently maintain the three early voting days before Election Day. This filing is in response to Ohio Republicans efforts to remove voting on the Saturday, Sunday, and Monday before Election Day.

Democratic National Committee Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz released the below statement:

“Today’s decision reaffirms the importance of voting early. In 2012, 96,000 Ohioans were able to cast their ballot during the final three days of early voting. This November and beyond, thousands more will be able to join them. This isn't just a victory for the Democratic Party, it's a victory for the democratic process.”
